The Lawrence Album: volume of prints, drawings, watercolours and photographs connected with the life of Sir Henry Montgomery and Lady Honoria Douglas Lawrence and their family. Photographer(s): Hutchinson, Charles Waterloo
- Scope & Content:
-
Album of 66 drawings, prints and cut-outs, along with 35 photographs connected with the life of Henry Montgomery Lawrence (1806-1857) and Honoria Lawrence, née Marshall (1810-54), presented to their daughter Honoria Letitia (1850-1923) in 1859 by her aunt and godmother Charlotte Frances Lawrence (1814-1885). The album is half bound morocco with marbled paper covers, measuring 530 x 380 mm and containing 40 folios. Inscribed on first folio ‘Honoria Letitia Lawrence from her Aunt and Godmother C. F. Lawrence June 28 1859.’
Note: Henry Lawrence’s sister, Charlotte Frances Lawrence, was the 10th child of Col. Alexander Lawrence (1762/4-1835) and Letitia Catherine, née Knox (1774-1846). Unmarried, she accompanied Henry and his wife Honoria (“Honie”) to India in 1848/9. In 1857 she and her niece, Honoria Letitia, went from Mt Abu to Bombay, where Henry Lawrence was to join them before returning to England. This plan was interrupted when Canning requested that Lawrence take over the Chief Commissionership of Oudh. Henry Montgomery Lawrence (1806-57) served in India between 1823 and 1857. Besides serving in numerous military campaigns, Lawrence was stationed in Kabul (1842), Nepal (1843-46), The Punjab (1849-53), Rajputana (1854-57) and Oudh (1857). He was killed in Lucknow during the Mutiny.
