The Acropolis of Athens: illustrated picturesquely and architecturally in photography. Photographer(s): Stillman, William James
- Scope & Content:
-
Imprint: London: F. S. Ellis, 33 King Street, Covent Garden. 1870.
Folio volume in green buckram (modern binding) measuring 545 x 387 mm, containing 26 carbon prints, guard-mounted one to a page (recto only) on card, with brief letterpress descriptions on facing pages. A short introductory notice by Stillman states: 'The negatives from which the following Autotypes are printed have been, with one exception, left untouched, that nothing should injure the outlines, or diminish the architectural accuracy, of the Views. The negatives are all produced with Dallmeyer's rectilinear lenses, and the façades, as far as practicable, photographed from points exactly equidistant from the extremities.' According to his autobiography, Stillman had first learnt photography in 1857 ('Autobiography of a Journalist,' 2 vols., London, 1901; vol. 1, p. 239). His photographs of the Acropolis were taken during a leave of absence from Crete in 1869, where he was serving as American Consul: 'As I had given my leisure in Crete to the practice of photography, and was provided with everything necessary to correct architectural work, I set about photographing the ruins of Athens, which I found had never been treated intelligently by the local photographers...' (vol. 2, p. 67).See also 1701.c.13, which consists of duplicates or near-duplicates of prints 1-23 of the present work. The prints in the present volume are on the whole more richly toned and warmer than those in 1701.c.13.
