Folio, half-leather and red cloth binding (British Museum, 1960), with royal coat of arms stamped in blind on upper board, measuring 590 x 460 mm; pp. 4, 2, [1], 29, followed by 60 albumen print reproductions of painting by Scheffer mounted one to a page (recto only), on light card within imitation plate marks, with lithographed captions on the mount beneath each image. The prints are blind-stamped 'Goupil et Compie' along the bottom edge of each image. The original wrappers, bound in with the volume, state that the work would be available either as a complete volume, or as 15 'livraisons,' each containing four prints, to be issued on the 1st and 15th of each month, starting on 15 December 1859. The published price was 20 francs for each livraison or 300 francs for the complete work. The Dutch painter, sculptor and Lithographer Ary Scheffer (1795-1858) worked mainly in France and was best known for his romantic portraits and genre studies.
