July 1889 to June 1890, 13-24, plus special (unnumbered) Christmas issue. From December 1889, publication taken over by Sampsom Low. A note by Engel at the beginning of volume II states that 'literary engagements entered into some time ago render it impossible for me to continue, with the attention it requires, the editorship of this work.' Waléry himself, therefore, 'not only one of the best photographers known, but a very shrewd business man,' took on the role of editor from July 1889, farming out the biographical memoirs to the following writers: John Rolph, W. R. Sullivan, Lionel Monckton, A. M. Broadley, Clement Scott, Gertrude E. Campbell, J. J. Withers, G. Colmache, Percy Notcutt and A. J. Mounteney- Jephson.
