The City of Our Lord. Twelve Photographs of Jerusalem. Photographer(s): Anthony, John
- Scope & Content:
-
Imprint: London: Richard Griffin and Co. Stationers' Hall Court. Cundall, Downes, and Co. 168, New Bond Street. 1861
Folio volume, bound in purple cloth (original binding with some staining, repaired and rebacked), measuring 380 x 290mm, with decorative cartouche in gilt reading 'The City of Our Lord' on upper board, blind ruled; edges gilt. The volume has sustained some damage from water-staining in the past. The work contains 12 topographical and archiutectural views of Jerusalem, mounted on light card, one to a page (recto only), accompanied by descriptive letterpress. There is some waterstaining throughout. The work is ascribed to 'John Anthony, M.D.' by Nissan N. Perez in 'Focus East. Early Photography in the Near East (1839-1885)' (New York, 1998), p. 126, where he writes: 'John Anthony visited Jerusalem in the spring of 1857 (June) and produced a series of images. Twelve of those were later published in an album under the name 'The City of Our Lord'.' Helmut Gernsheim, 'Incunabula of British Photographic Literature' (Scolar Press, London and Berkeley, 1984), item 144, also attributes the work to Anthony.
