Full leather oblong folio album, measuring 320 x 440 mm, with publisher's monogram, an intertwined 'P & S' within a shield, and title 'Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the War' stamped in gilt on front board, within gold tooled borders; marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. The lithographed title page, showing scenes from the war, signed 'A. R. Ward' (i.e. Alfred Rudolph Waud), is followed by a contents page listing the titles of the photographs.The photographs mounted on light card within a tinted border, with letterpress caption, photographer's credit, printer's credit (Alexander Gardner) and statement asserting Alexander Gardner's copyright printed beneath. An overlay with descriptive text precedes each image.Uniform with volume 1.
