Half-leather oblong quarto volume, red buckram boards, measuring 225 x 290 mm, and containing 20 albumen prints, mounted on card one to a page (recto only), with brief letterpress captions beneath. The photographs are prefaced by a five page introduction by H. de Blaignerie, giving a brief historical account of events leading up to the destruction of prominent buildings in the city during its retaking from the Commune by the Versailles Army in late May 1871. This is followed by detailed notes on the photographs by Edouard Dangin. The photographs themselves show some of the most important buildings and streets damaged during the fighting, including the Place Vendôme after the column had been demolished (an event that took place before the entry of the Versailles troops), the Tuileries Palace, the Palais Royal, the Hôtel de Ville, the Ministry of Finance, the Docks de la Villette and the rue de Rivoli. Following the standard propaganda of the day, both de Blaignerie and Dangin's text place the blame for this destruction squarely on the heads of the Communards.
