Imprint: Darmstadt, druck und verlag von C. W. Leske. 1854.
Folio, grey paper boards and cloth spine, measuring 332 x 265 mm; viii, 4, 14, 4, 2, 7, and unpaginated leaves facing plates. This work on prehistoric mammalia by the palaeontologist and zoologist Johann Jacob Kaup (1803-1873), was published in 5 parts between 1854 and 1861. Only the first part or 'Heft', listed here, is illustrated with original photographs: from plate 10 in this issue, and throughout the succeeding instalments, lithography was used for the illustrative matter. Part 1 contains 9 salted paper prints of the skeletal remains (mainly teeth and jawbones) of extinct rhinoceroses, mounted on light card within gilt borders, with explanatory letterpress on the facing page. In his introduction, Kaup claims this to be perhaps the first zoological publication to include original photographs and briefly addresses both the medium's potential and the difficulties in the illustration of scientific works, speculating that more sensitive chemicals than silver might be found and which might result in the production of direct positive images: 'Die Abbildungen sind grösstheils Photographien, die aus dem Atelier des Herrn Wilhelm Thomas, eines mir befreundeten Künstlers, hervorgegangen sind.
