Clouds: their forms and combinations. Photographer(s): Guyton, Joseph
- Scope & Content:
-
Imprint: Longmans, Green and Co., London, 1868.
Quarto volume measuring 315 x 262 mm, in modern red buckram binding on guards (original cover preserved), containing carbon print reproductions of sketches of cloud formations, made between 1862 and 1867, by the landscape artist Elijah Walton (1832-1880). In his preface to the work, Walton recalls that 'during several years spent abroad the author devoted special attention to the forms and combinations of clouds, and produced the drawings from which the photographs in this volume have been taken. Those drawings were made with the utmost care, and he hopes that these reproductions of them may prove useful and instructive. The greater number were the result of an excursion on the Nile in 1862 with Sir Henry Bulwer, our late Ambassador at Constantinople, and some of the others were made in August of the same year. The author is sensible how much still remains to be done; but he ventures to hope that what he has accomplished may give some guidance to the observer of Nature and her beauties ... ' The 31 pp. letterpress accompanying the prints forms a basic introduction to the processes of cloud formation, addressed particularly to the landscape artist and concluding with a list of paintings on display in the the National Gallery, 'in which specimens of imperfect cloud-drawing and combination may be seen.'
