The News of the Camp. A journal of fancies, notifications, gossip and general chit chat, published in the military camp of Her Majesty's forces defending the beleagured inhabitants of Pretoria. Photographer(s): Gros, H. F.
- Scope & Content:
-
Imprint: Printed at the Military Camp, Pretoria, during the Transvaal War of 1880-81.
Folio, bound in cloth with marbled paper boards, measuring 370 x 253 mm. The volume comprises a complete run of the camp newspaper (nos. 1-40, 25 December 1880-9 April 1881), produced during the siege of Pretoria: 'The Editors believe that 'The News of the Camp' still contains sufficient details of the war in the Transvaal, as well as the incidents occuring within beleagured Pretoria, to render it both intructive and amusing, as a memento of the siege of a hundred days, from 18th December, 1880, to 28th March, 1881.' Of the two original photographs included, print 1 is mounted on the overall titlepage, print 2 on a blank leaf at the end of the volume. Print 1 is explicitly credited to H. F. Gros and the second print is presumably also his work.
