Large folio, quarter bound volume in buckram with marbled paper boards, 471 x 373 mm, with titlepage, 4 pp. introductory letterpress, 1 p. contents list and 20 albumen prints, mounted on card and bound on guards, with letterpress caption labels pasted beneath each print. The photographs comprise a general view of the cathedral and its surroundings, followed by a series closer views of sculpture in the Portico de la Gloria and of some of the elaborately decorated doorways. Prints 12-14 were made from photographs of plaster casts in the South Kensington Museum, since 'from their position in the portico, the archivolt and tympanum of the central doorway could not be satisfactorily photographed.' Thompson, one of the most important photographers of art objects in the nineteenth century, travelled abroad for the Department of Science and Art in 1866, to photograph architectural subjects in France, Spain and Portugal.
