Mason and Co.'s uniform series of photographs of English cathedrals. Canterbury. Photographer(s): Unknown
- Scope & Content:
-
Imprint: London: Mason and Co., 28, Old Bond Street [c. 1867].
3 parts (Canterbury, Ely, Norwich) bound in together, with original wrappers, each part cost 15s, with letter dated 8 October 1868, from John Kemp of Mason and Co, stating that 'The work on Cathedrals you ask for, we were compelled to suspend for a time, but hope to continue some day, when of course copies shall be sent to the Museum.' The letter also notes that other photographic publications by the firm - 'The British Photographic Portrait Gallery,' 'Bench and Bar,' and 'The Church of England Portrait Gallery,' 'ended at the publication you have.'Coth and paper boards, 573 x 390 mm, pp. [3] of letterpress, prints mounted on card within false plate marks, with title and publisher's credit lithographed below. From the advertising matter on the wrapper for forthcoming issues, it appears that Ely appeared first, followed by Norwich and then Canterbury, rather than the order in which they are bound here. The advertised views of Rochester and Peterborough ('will be ready shortly'), were clearly never published.
