Octavo volume, cloth spine with marbled paper boards, measuring 266 x 187 mm, containing 25 salted paper prints, lightly mounted along left and right edges, one to a page (recto only) within a printed border, with handwritten plate numbers in Roman numerals on small labels pasted above each image and additional notes written on the print surface in black ink; British Museum date stamp on face of all prints. The preliminary text consists of a 2pp. introduction (dated Vienna, November 1859), 4 pp. introduction to entomological terminology (‘Einleitung oder Vorbegriffe der Insectenkunde’), followed by detailed notes on the plates (pp. 9-27). These consist of microphotographs of entomological specimens. This first volume was followed by three further parts, issued in a smaller format (for which, see shelfmark 7297.g.4, parts 2-4, bound in a single volume). The numbering of plates runs consecutively through the parts, comprising a total of 100 prints.
