Cardboard box measuring 90 x 170 mm, with title label in German and French on top, containing 12 stereoscopic doubles, mounted on yellow card measuring 72 x 168 mm, each printed with photographer's credit (on left) and 'Chirurgische Klinik Zürich' on right. Also included are two 12 pp. pamphlets, in German and French, giving an introductory account of this photographic project and detailed notes on the subjects illustrated. In his introduction, dated December 1865, Billroth writes that for several years past, following the examples of medical colleagues, he had been using photography to illustrate interesting surgical cases: in addition to showing unusual conditions, these photographs were taken with a didactic aim, and in several instances show patients before and after treatment. From the large collection compiled with Ganz's assistance, Billroth states that he was issuing this initial selection of a dozen images, in order to determine whether there was sufficient interest among his medical colleagues to justify further instalments. No subsequent parts appear to have been issued.
