Quarto volume, measuring 290 x 230 mm,original brown cloth binding, with title and author stamped in gilt on upper board; pp. xiii, [2], 33, with four uncaptioned albumen prints, mounted one to a page on light card, showing the patient Joseph Bramwell before and after the amputation of his right leg and two photographs of the tumour after the operation. The operation was carried out by Gamgee in Birmingham on 11 September 1862; the photographs of the tumour were taken some time later in Paris, where the amputated limb was examined and dissected.
