Quarto pamphlet, pp. 11, folding plan, bound in as item 9 in a volume entitled 'Archaeological tracts.' The text of the pamphlet describes Harris's excavations in 1862-63 of a Buddhist monastery site, discovered in the vicinity of the Sultanganj railway yard. A letter from Alexander Cunningham, read at a meeting of the Asiatic Society of Bengal on 8 October 1862, is also printed (pp. 10-11), in which he confirms the importance of the site and supports the financing of further excavations. The photographs (uncredited, but presumed to be the work of Harris) show views of the large copper Buddha image discovered during the excavations, a general view of the site and views of the temple, mosque and rock carvings at near-by Jahangira.The author E. B. Harris is here assumed to be Edward Brickell Harris (d. 1879), whose will describes him as a retired engineer, formerly active in India (see IOR/L/AG/34/29/127 p. 3).
