Report on the operations connected with the observation of the total solar eclipse of April 6, 1875 at Camorta, in the Nicobar Islands. Photographer(s): Waterhouse, James
- Scope & Content:
-
Imprint: Calcutta: Office of the Superintendent of Government Printing. 1875.
Folio measuring 335 x 218 mm, bound in blue paper-covered boards, with title printed on upper and lower boards; pp. 24, with six mounted albumen print illustrations and two folding plates. The letterpress contains Waterhouse's 'complete report upon the operations of the Indian Expedition to observe the total solar eclipse of April 6th at Camorta, in the Nicobar Islands, with appendices by Mr. Mendola (in charge of the English Expediton) and Professor Tacchini' (p. 1). The photographic illustrations show the observation post of the expedition and various groups of observers with their instruments. Apart from the technical lessons learned, the expedition was not a success. While organisational inefficiencies and lack of co-ordination between the various parties played a part (to which Waterhouse refers in his report), the failure to secure a good set of photographs of the eclipse was largely due to weather conditions in the Nicobar Islands, which prevented any observations from being made.
