Archaeological Studies in Jerusalem. Two lectures delivered at the Royal Institute of British Architects, February 25th and March 10th, 1856, illustrated with a plan and fourteen photographs. Photographer(s): Wigley, George J.
- Scope & Content:
-
Imprint: London: C. Dolman, 61, New Bond Street, and 22, Paternoster Row. 1856.
Quarto, bound in quarter leather and red cloth, measuring 280 x 220 mm, pp. 20. The work contains a brief preface, the texts of Wigley's two lectures and ensuing discussion, followed by 14 architectural and archaeological views of Jerusalem, mounted one to a page (recto only), with letterpress caption labels pasted beneath each image and a letterpress label above, reading 'Archaeological Studies in Jerusalem. George J. Wigley, Architect.' The plates are followed by a printed plan of Jerusalem and a list of the photographic illustrations, with a note stating that 'All these plates may be had separately, at 1s. 6d. each.' It is also stated that a 'Photographic panorama of the interior of Jerusalem' was being prepared for publication, although this remains untraced. In his preface, dated 1 May 1856, Wigley justifies the publication by noting that 'there is at yet no work among the many written on the Holy City, which treats of its remains as only a practical Architect can view them, and that, after a residence of some time on the spot. This fact must be my excuse for presuming to publish, at the same time, these remarks and their accompanying illustrations, which, with all the imperfection of amateur practice and waxed paper negatives, are still the only faithful reproductions, as yet existing, of the monument I allude to.'
