Quarto volume measuring 286 x 222 mm, original red cloth binding, with title and decorative border in gilt on upper board (rebacked), edges gilt; pp. 32, plus 16 albumen prints views mounted one to a page (recto only), with letterpress captions printed beneath each image. The first print is mounted as a titlepage vignette. Frith's introduction alludes to the growing popularity of continental tourism, in his remark that 'The Rhine, now-a-days, is 'at our doors.' Everybody who can afford a guinea for my book has been, or might have been, up the Rhine; I do not therefore forget that I write chiefly for those who have seen it. To such I hope the photographs will recall some happy hours...'
