- Scope & Content:
-
Imprint: [Southampton: Ordnance Survey] 1867.
Quarto, green buckram volume (modern binding) measuring 352 x 273 mm; pp. [4], 20, [8], with plates, maps and plans; containing 8 albumen print views of Stonehenge. The work contains letterpress by Sir Henry James, plans and photographs of Stonehenge and zincographic reproductions of four sketches by James of cromlechs in County Down. An appendix, published in 1868, describes, and reproduces sketches of sculptured stones and a monumental cross covering a grave found in Inverness. James's preface to the work states that it 'is circulated for the information of Officers on the Ordnance Survey, in the hope that it may stimulate them to make plans and sketches, and to give descriptive remarks of such Objects of Antiquity as they may meet with during the progress of the Survey of the Kingdom.'
