Photographs of English and Scottish scenery. By G. W. Wilson. English Cathedrals — York and Durham. 12 views. Photographer(s): Wilson, George Washington
- Scope & Content:
-
Imprint: Aberdeen: 24 and 25, Crown Street. 1865.
Crown quarto volume, measuring 222 x 190 mm, in original green cloth binding, stamped in gilt on upper board, 'Photographs by G. W. Wilson. English Cathedrals York & Durham 12 views.' The work contains 12 small albumen prints mounted one to a page (recto only), with letterpress captions beneath and an accompanying page of letterpress description for each image. This volume forms the first of a series of topographical views of England and Scotland, produced by Wilson between 1865 and 1868, of which 11 parts are held in the British Library. This first volume, published in Aberdeen, was produced on very friable, poor quality paper; for subsequent volumes, better quality card was used for mounting the photographs and these are consequently in better condition. From part 7, the publisher's imprint is that of the London firm of Marion and Co., although the work continued to be printed in Aberdeen.
