Octavo, quarter leather and buckram British Museum binding, measuring 232 x 178 mm, containing 24 albumen print portraits mounted on thin card, with an accompanying letterpress biographical notice of each sitter. The series was issued in parts from July 1865, each part priced at 3s. and containing three portraits. This volume lacks the titlepage and index and contains only one of the original wrappers (for no. 1). The original editor Thomas Herbert Barker died in 1865 and the second volume of the work, bound in with this volume, was continued under the editorship of William Tindal Robertson.
