Quarter leather and green buckram oblong folio volume measuring 540 x 345 mm, with coat of arms stamped in gilt on front and back covers (the binding is uniform with 1736.a.6). The work, issued in parts, contains 56 tinted or coloured lithographs, four maps and nine original photographs, recording Trémaux's African travels and explorations. It appears that the work was originally intended to make greater use of photographic illustrations, but that the impermanence of the prints that were issued prevented this. A handwritten note in French on the cover of livraisons 17-18 states that faded photographs will be replaced by photo-lithographic copies at no additional cost to the subscriber, and on the covers of livraisons 19-26, there appears a printed notice stating that since the effects of light and other agents do not guarantee the photographs lasting for the whole production of the work, and that the quality of the images themselves, owing to the difficult circumstances under which they were taken, is indifferent, the illustrations will in future be produced by lithography. Photographs already supplied would be replaced by lithographs free of charge. An additional note to the binder advises that these replacements would be printed on thin paper that could be pasted over the photograph or, if it was wished to preserve the prints as 'testaments of authenticity,' mounted on the other side of the page. The cover for the first livraison only is bound in at the end of the volume. The remaining livraison covers are bound with Trémaux's 'Parallèle des édifices anciens et moderne du continent africain dessinés et relevés de 1847 à 1854 ... Atlas avec notices' at pressmark 1736.a.6. The title for livraison covers 1-10 gives the dates of Trémaux's travels as '1847 et 1848.' The single livraison cover for parts 11 and 12 changes this to '1847 à 1854.'The prospectus for the work, states that it would be published in monthly parts from June 1852 and would be issued in three series. The present work forms the first series, comprising the 'picturesque and scientific,' and was to be published in 18 parts or 'livraisons,' containing 64 folio plates and maps with descriptive text, plus a separate 2-volume octavo work (at pressmark 10096.cc.8). In fact the volume, which appears to be complete, contains 56 plates, 9 original photographic prints and four maps. The second series, devoted to 'buildings and monuments of all periods and styles,' would also be issued in 18 livraisons and would contain 76 plates with descriptive text (for which, see 1736.a.6, containing in fact 82 plates, 8 photographs and map). The third series, dealing with the archaeology of Asia Minor, was to be published in 43 livraisons and would contain 215 plates, with descriptive text (an imperfect copy of this, containing no original photographs, can be found at pressmark ***). The first and second series of the work appear to have been published concurrently, at least after the issue of part 10. The livraison covers to the first and second series are bound in at the back of the latter, Trémaux's 'Parallèles des edifices anciens et modernes .Atlas' (pressmark 1736.a.6), and a number of these have handwritten notes indicating to which part of the work they refer. For livraisons 1-10 no note is supplied, but livraisons 11-12, 17-20, 23-24 and 27-28 are marked 'Voyage,' while livraisons 13-16, 21-22, 25-26 and 29-33 are marked 'Parallèle.' For another copy of this volume, without lithographic duplicates of the photographs, see X.893, originally part of the India Office Library.
