Folio, quarter leather and red cloth boards, measuring 445 x 332 mm, edges gilt, marbled endpapers. The work consists of 44 prints contributed by members of the Photographic Club, laid down one to a page on recto, with a facing page of letterpress description of the subjects, with technical notes on processes and equipment. Inserted at the front of the volume is a letter to Dr. Hugh Welch Diamond from John Barton, Vice President and Secretary of the Royal Institution, dated April 19 1856. This brief communication thanks Dr. Diamond on behalf of the Institution, 'for your valuable and interesting contributions to the Library Table at the weekly evening meeting on Friday last.' The insertion of the letter in the volume may indicate that this copy of the work originally belonged to Diamond, who contributed a photograph to the publication (see plate 26). The precise date of publication is not stated, but dates are given in the text for the taking of the majority of the photographs, ranging from 1850 to 1855. The work would have required very swift preparation if it appeared in 1855.
