Presented by Sir John Sinclair, 8 July 1806, when other drawings of Madras were presented by him.
Inscribed on reverse: ‘The Incarnations of Vishnow for Sir John Sinclair Baronet of Ulbster [sic]. Presented by Sir John Sinclair.’
Gouache with gold; narrow yellow and red borders.
415 by 535 mm; page 425 by 545 mm.
Visnu stands with Laksmi and Garuda in attendance, his ten incarnations represented in panels beneath and on either side. The backgrounds are orange with silver leaves suspended from above.
Note: The painting would appear to have been collected by Thomas Fraser who served with the Madras Engineers from 1796 to 1819.
