An inhabitant of the Poggy Islands, near Sumatra. Artist(s): Manu Lal (fl. c.1798-1811)
- Scope & Content:
-
An inhabitant of the Poggy Islands, near Sumatra. He is tattooed and carries a bow and arrow.
By Manu Lal, a Patna artist resident in Calcutta, c.1810.
Inscribed on front in English: ‘A Native of the Poggy Islands’; in Persian characters: ‘Raqim i in taswir Manu La‘l musauwir sakin i Azimabad’ (The painter of this picture [was] Manu Lal of Azimabad, i.e. Patna); on back: ‘Parry. 26 June, 1812.’
Water-colour; 9.5 by 5.75 ins.
Presented 26 June 1812, together with Richard Parry’s collection of 202 drawings of ‘Plants and Animals from Sumatra’.
Note: Manu Lal, a Patna painter, appears to have been living in Calcutta c.1798 to 1812 where he made natural history drawings. A painting by him of animals is in the Wellesley collection (NHD32, f.81). He appears to have also worked for Richard Parry of the Bengal Civil Service and to have been taken to Sumatra by Parry when the latter became Resident of Fort Marlborough 1807 to 1811 (see NHD2, nos. 286-299 and Archer (1962), 19, 55, 61, 87, 93, 97). Azimabad is the Muslim name for Patna. For early accounts of the Poggy or Nassau Islands, see J. Crisp, ‘An account of the inhabitants of the Poggy, or, Nassau Islands, lying off Sumatra’, ‘Asiatick Researches,’ vi, 1799, 77-92 and T.S. Raffles, ‘Account of the Poggies’, Mss Eur F32, 81-114 (see G.R. Kaye, ‘Catalogue of manuscripts in European languages in the India Office Library’ (London, 1937), ii, part ii, no.238).
