- Title:

Shwehmawdaw Pagoda, Pegu, Burma
- Scope & Content:
-
The Shwehmawdaw Pagoda, Pegu, Burma.
Probably by an Indian artist in Calcutta, c.1800.
Inscribed: ‘Choemadoo, the Great Temple at Pegue. See Syme’s Ava, p.186. Height 361’; on back a note written by Sotheby’s in 1888.
Water-colour; 18 by 23 ins. Pink border with Indian ink rules.
Purchased 6 May 1913.
Note: An interest in Burma was aroused in the British by the expedition to the Kingdom of Ava led by Michael Symes, February to December 1795. After his return he published ‘Of the City of Pegue, and the Temple of Shoemadoo Praw’, ‘Asiatick Researches,’ v, Calcutta, 1798, 111-122, and ‘An Account of an embassy to the Kingdom of Ava sent by the Governor-General of India in the year 1795’ (London, 1800). The present picture is very similar to the engraving, ‘Shoemadoo, the Great Temple at Pegue. Drawn by Singey Bey’, facing p.186 in the above book. It seems probable that copies and versions of this picture were made by Indian artists in Calcutta after the publication of Symes’ book, and were incorporated into series of views.
