Purchased 26 October 1954 from Mrs Vandaleur, a descendant of Sir Herbert Edwardes, assistant to Henry Lawrence, resident at Lahore in 1847 and 1848. The pictures were found amongst Edwardes’s papers (‘see also:’ Add.Or.707, 709, 2640-2647, etc.).
Originally inscribed on fly-leaf in ink in Urdu: ‘Udham Singh and’ ‘Randhir Singh’; in English: ‘Mean Oodum Sing Sohun Sing, late sons of Maharaja Golab Singh.’

Udham Singh and Sohan Singh, the first and second sons of Maharaja Gulab Singh, are seated facing one another on a terrace laid with fine carpets. Two servants are in attendance and a canopy is above them.
Note: Udham Singh, eldest son of Gulab Singh, was killed with Nau Nihal Singh while returning from the funeral of Kharak Singh in November 1840. Sohan Singh (Randhir), the second son of Gulab Singh, was killed with Raja Hira Singh and Pandit Jalla in December 1844.
