Inscribed on back in Urdu: ‘Hasan al-Din musavvir’ (painter Hasan al-Din).

The durbar of December 1845; the young Maharaja is seated on a chair holding a gun, a pet lap dog at his feet and an attendant with a fly-whisk behind him. On the Maharaja’s left sit Diwan Dina Nath and Fakir Nur al-Din holding a book and rosary; on his right sit Tej Singh with a rosary and Labh Singh with a sword and shield.
Note: In 1845 Dina Nath was Dalip Singh’s finance minister and Nur al-Din his adviser. Tej Singh was commander in chief of the Sikh army from August 1845 and Labh Singh an army commander.
