- Title:

Palladian garden-house near Madras.
- Scope & Content:
-
Palladian garden-house near Madras.
By a Madras artist, c.1790.
Inscribed on mount: ‘House built by Thomas Powney Esq., 2 miles from Fort St George on the Mount Road.’
Water-colour; 6.5 by 13.25 ins.
Purchased 10 August 1957.
Note: Thomas Powney (1721-82) was a free merchant living in Madras from 1750. He came of a well-known family whose members had been going to Madras from the beginning of the eighteenth century. In 1761 he married Catherine de la Metrie and in 1764 he became Mayor of Madras. As a result of his increasing prosperity, he apparently felt justified in building a garden-house for on 1 November 1774 he was issued with a lease for a plot of 8 acres, rent 2 Pagodas, ‘between the Road leading to the Mount & the river before Mr Stratton’s house’ (see Love,’Vestiges of Old Madras,’ iii, 58). For Thomas Powney, see J. Shakespear, ‘George Nesbitt Thompson and some’ ‘of his descendants’ (Gateshead upon Tyne, 1937), 64-67.
The style of the drawing would suggest a date of about 1790 and the picture was probably made for a subsequent tenant of the house.
