- Title:
-
Svetambara Jain monk of the Dhundhiya sect with brush and mask.
- Scope & Content:
-
A Svetambara Jain monk of the Dhundhiyas sect with brush and mask.
By a Western Indian artist, perhaps at Bhuj, Cutch, c.1856.
Inscribed on back in Gujarati: ‘goraji dhundiyo hame ra tadri khana pakhana me luretala vaniaonva padri.’
Water-colour; 5.75 by 4.5 ins.
Presented by Mrs Mavis Strange, 4 September 1958.
Note: This drawing closely resembles Add.Or.1551 and was probably painted at about the same time. The Svetambara Jains consider the brush, water-pot and mask essential to the character of an ascetic. The Dhundhiya sect rigorously adheres to the moral code but disregards set forms of prayer and external worship.
