- Scope & Content:
-
A pile-carpet loom at Hunsur (Mysore).
By a South Indian artist, 1850.
Pen-and-ink and water-colour; 17.5 by 24.5 ins.
Inscribed in Persian: ‘ghalichah buni (bunni) ka pathra’ (Rug weaving loom): in English: ‘Plan and Elevation of a Carpet loom with five men at work. Grazing Farm. Hoonsoor. 1st Nov, 1850.’
Presented to the East India Company’s Museum, 1850.
Note: The Amrit Mahal cattle-breeding establishment was at Hunsur, on the south-western side of Mysore adjoining Coorg. Until 1864 it had a large tannery, blanket manufactory and timber yard maintained by, the Madras Commmissariat. This drawing may well have been sent to the East India Company together with a specimen carpet for the Museum.
