Panorama of Delhi.
- Scope & Content:
-
Panorama of Delhi seen from the Ridge (i.e. the north-west) showing the city of Shahjahanabad silhouetted against the sky; in the middle distance the city wall; from right to left, Garstin’s Bastion, the Lahore Gate, the Kabuli Gate, the Shah Bastion and the Kashmir Gate with St. James’s Church nearby.
By a Delhi artist, c.1840.
Faintly inscribed in Persian characters with names of gates and buildings. On the back is a damaged Persian seal which appears to be inscribed with the dates 1123 or 1203 Hijri. A damaged paper scroll on rollers which has now been backed with linen.
Pencil and water-colour; 16.25 by 66.5 ins.
Note: The date on the seal has no relation to the date of the scroll. Some Englishman may have bought an old seal and used it on his pictures and papers. Since St.James’s Church was built in 1836,the scroll must have been made after that date. There was a fashion for panoramas among the British in the eighteen forties (see also Add.Or.739 and 888). The stylistic hesitation and muzzy painting suggest that this panorama was made by an Indian artist endeavouring to work in a European style for a particular patron.
