Illustrations of literary and popular subjects. Four on one sheet. Three are illustrations of a Bengali poem, the ‘Bidyasundar’ showing (i) Sundar (the lover-thief) riding to Burdwan; (2) the kotwal arresting him; (3) women visiting an ascetic; (4) a mail coach.
By Hira Lal Karmakar of Bottala and Gopi Caran Svarnakar of Kombuleetola, Calcutta, c.1860-70.
Inscribed: ‘65. Nos 1, 2, 3, Subjects from Bidyasundar & 4 a mail coach;’ engraved in Bengali characters on (1) ‘sri gupicaran svarnakarer khodita’ (engraved by Gopi Caran Svarnakar); (2) ‘kotaler coradhara’ (the kotwal arrests the thief) ‘sri gupicaran svarnakarer khodita’ (engraved by Gopi Caran Svarnakar); (3) ‘sri hiralal karmakarer krita bottala’ (done by Hiralal Karmakar of Bottala); (4) uninscribed.
Coloured wood-engravings; 238 by 378 mm.
Deposited c.1871 together with Add.Or.891-916, and 918-19.
NOTE:The Sanskrit poem, the’ Caurapanchasika’ (‘Fifty stanzas of a Thief’) was freely rendered into Bengali under the title, ‘Bidyasundar,’ by a number of Bengali writers including Bharat Candra Ray and was frequently performed as a popular drama.
