Illustrations of mythological, religious and popular subjects. Four on one sheet. Two depict the teacher Vaisampayan telling the story of the ‘Mahabharata’ to Raja Janamejaya; one shows a railway train and one a ferry steamer.
By Pancanan Karmakar, Hoglakunda, and Hira Lal Karmakar, Bottala, Calcutta, c.1860-70.
Inscribed: ‘66. Nos 1 & 2 Court of Janamijaya. 3 & 4 Railway trains & Ferrey (sic) steamer;’ engraved in Bengali characters on (1) ‘vaisampayan muni vakta. raja janamejaya srota’ (the teacher Vaisampayan is speaking. Raja Janmejaya is listening). ‘sri pancanan karmakarer khodita san hoglakunda’ (engraved by Pancanan Karmakar of Hoglakunda); (2) ‘raja janmejaya srota. vaisampayan muni vakta. sri pancananer khodita san hoglakunda; (3) sri hiralal karmakarer krita’ (done by Hiralal Karniakar); (4) uninscribed.
Coloured wood-engraving; 230 by 387 mm.
Deposited c.1871 together with Add.Or.891-917, and 919.
Note: Hoglakunda was probably the area near Hat Kholna (Calcutta 5) where’ hoglas’ (dried palm leaves for thatching) were bought and sold.
