Amir Khan, subahdar of Allahabad. Artist(s): Sital Das (fl. 1780-1782)
- Scope & Content:
-
Amir Khan, subadar of Allahabad.
By Sital Das, Lucknow, c.1780-90.
Purchased June 1959.
Inscribed on mount in Persian: ‘shabeh-i bakhshi-i navab amir khan, subadar ilahabad, ‘amal i sital das’ (likeness of Bakhshi Nawab Amir Khan, subadar of Allahabad, the work of Sital Das).
Gouache on plain background; mounted on paper with ruled borders.
94 by 85 mm; page 233 by 172 mm.
Amir Khan kneels facing left, holding a pink rose in his right hand, and dressed in white with a black-handled dagger at his waist.
Note: From a collection made for Col. John Murray of the Bengal army by Lieut. James Hoare, a Military Assistant Surveyor who died at Barrackpore in 1798. This is the only picture in the collection which is by Sital Das, yet not painted for Johnson. Unlike his Johnson pictures it is finished in gouache, but the style is in line with his illustrations of religious ceremonies which comprise most of his work in the collection (‘see’ Album 5, 10-24).
