Gajendra-moksha.
Murshidabad, c.1770.
Formerly Album 49, no.3; presented by Dr John Fleming, c.1814.
Inscribed above: ‘From’ ‘Dr Fleming’.
Gouache with gold; red border.
175 by 125 mm; page 210 by 135 mm.
The salvation of the king elephant; he stands on the river-bank holding a lotus flower in his trunk. The green crocodile appears from the water to bite his foreleg, and Visnu approaches from the right, raising his mace. There is a grove of plantain trees behind under a streaked sky.
Note: The iconography varies from the norm; here it is a two-armed form of Visnu who comes to the rescue of the elephant, instead of the four-armed Visnu with his vehicle Garuda.
