Diagram of the Golden City and the Royal Palace, Mandalay (or Amarapura?)
- Scope & Content:
-
Diagram of the Golden City and the Royal Palace, Mandalay, Burma.
By a Burmese artists, c.1855-60.
Inscribed on the outside in Burmese characters.
The plan is inscribed with notes and measurements.
Opaque water-colour.
Acquired 1 August 1934.
Note: The Royal palace was built just before 1856 when the court of King Mindon moved from Amarapura to what had been only a pilgrimage site at the foot of the Mandalay Hill, which is here depicted in green. The figures in white are celestial dancers and are depicted walking on the wall that enclosed and defended the palace grounds. The rectangular enclosures within the walls are the residences of the extended royal family and the courtiers. Craftsmen and traders lived outside the walls of the palace, between it and the Irrawaddy river to the west. Other rectangles denote audience halls, pagodas, monasteries etc. within the palace enclosure.
The moat and walls stand as well as the gateways and the tiered-roof sentinel towers but the palace itself was destroyed by incendiary bombs during World Wall II. Drawings of details from this plan are in the Victoria and Albert Museum, India and South-east Asia Section (Box 432B).
