Nawab on a terrace. Artist(s): Muhammad Reza Hindi (fl.1763-1764)
- Scope & Content:
-
A nawab on a terrace.
By Muhammad Reza Hindi, Mughal, dated 1763-64.
Purchased 10 December 1962.
Signed in Persian: ‘raqam-i kamtarin muhammad reza-i hindi, 1177’ (the work of the humble Muhammad Reza ‘the Indian’, AH1177/AD1763-64).
Gouache with gold; on an album page with dark blue border.
207 by 261 mm; page 245 by 302 mm.
Reverse: a page of ‘nasta‘liq’ calligraphy with illumination in colours and gold; 16th century.
Reproduced: Losty and Leach (1998), pl. 26.
The nawab sits on an elaborately decorated terrace carpet smoking a hookah, with a youth kneeling before him and two servants in attendance.
Note: From an album sold by Colonel Sir John Forbes, great grandson of Sir Charles Forbes, First Baronet, who served with the East India Company in Bengal from 1765 to 1779. Of the miniatures in the album many were signed by Muhammad Reza Hindi. Apparently he painted the group for a single patron who is undoubtedly the nawab shown in the present terrace scene. In another of the portraits, the same man rides a horse (Sotheby, 17 December 1969, lot 13).
