Ghazi al-Din Haidar, Nawab and King of Oudh (1814-27)
- Scope & Content:
-
Portrait of Ghazi al-Din Haidar (Nawab and, after 1819, King of Oudh, 1814-27). Head and shoulders, wearing a crown and ermine cape.
By a Lucknow artist, 1826.
Inscribed on back, probably by Lord Amherst: ‘King of Oude 1826. Ghazi ood Deen Hyder King of Oude.’
Oval; water-colour on ivory; 2.5 by 2 ins.
Note: William Pitt, 2nd Baron Amherst, who was created 1st Earl Amherst of Aracan in 1826, was Governor-General of Fort William from 1823 to 1828. This miniature was probably acquired by him and his wife during their visit to Lucknow in December 1826.
The Delhi fashion of depicting rulers on ivory appears to have spread to Lucknow in the early nineteenth century.
