- Scope & Content:
-
Raja Sarabhoji of Tanjore (1777-1832, ruled 1798-1832) riding on horseback in procession followed by his son Sivaji (ruled 1832-53). The raja is preceded by elephants, musicians and red and gold banners. Behind him are attendants with parasol, fly-whisk and fans; in the foreground, soldiers and followers with swords and lances.
By a Tanjore artist, c.1820.
Gouache on treated linen, varnished; 22.5 by 30 ins.
Circumstances of acquisition unrecorded.
Note: This picture shows Tanjore officers and men of both cavalry and infantry. The officer and soldiers with long white pantaloons in the front of the procession are cavalry, the sepoys with short drawers are foot soldiers.
Pictures of its rulers in procession had long been made in Tanjore. A painting of Raja Tulsaji (ruled 1765-86) is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Indian Section, I.M. 319-1921), and a similar one of Raja Amar Singh (ruled 1787-98) passed through the London sale rooms in 1968.
