A dead monk in a funeral car
- Scope & Content:
-
An elaborately decorated funeral chariot bearing the body of a dead Buddhist monk lying on a ‘naga’ couch, with figures of ‘nats’ along its base, and with tiered roofs, finials and umbrellas above, being pulled in opposite directions in a tug-of-war by various small figures at its base.
By a Burmese artist, 1800-20.
Water-colour and body-colour heightened with gold; 503 by 550 mm.
Circumstances of acquisition unrecorded.
Note: Dead senior monks were accorded elaborate funerals in Burma, being carried in elaborate wooden and papier-mâché funeral chariots, which were set alight by having rockets fired into them; there are also reports of tugs-of-war with the cars, as here. See Cecil Headlam. ‘Ten Thousand Miles through India and Burma’, (London 1903), p.291, quoting from John Nisbet, ‘Burma under British Rule’.
