Gouache with gold; yellow and red borders.
156 by 107 mm; with border 178 by 131 mm.

Raja Jaswant Singh is seated on a carpet laid on a terrace, extending his right hand as if about to speak. Pieces of beetle wing have been used to simulate the emeralds of his necklace. Billowing clouds are across the top of the blue sky.
Note: During the chaos in the Punjab in the early nineteenth century, Raja Jaswant Singh consolidated his state at Nabha with lands granted him by Ranjit Singh. Nabha was later given British protection by the Treaty of Amritsar in 1809, and, with Patiala and Jind, became one of the three Phulkian State of the Malai Sikhs. Jaswant Singh’s successor Devendra Singh (1840-46) was a timid and vacillating character. During the Sikh war of 1845-46 he sympathised with the Sikhs and was deposed by the British but granted a pension. He was succeeded by his son Bharpur in 1847.
