Hardcastle Collection
Five ivory miniatures of Dost Muhammad Khan, Bahadur Shah II and three Mughal court ladies, set in a gilt and jewelled bracelet.
- Scope & Content:
-
A gold bracelet set with emeralds and ornamented with five ivory miniatures of Dost Muhammad Khan, Bahadur Shah II and three Mughal court ladies.
Made by a Delhi artist and goldsmith, c.1864.
Names inscribed on back of miniatures in English and in Persian script: ‘Dost Mohommad’;’ Moti Mahal’;’ Bahadur Shah Mogul’;’ Nur Jahan’;’ Taj Mahal.’
Miniatures oval, water-colour on ivory; 0.625 by 0.5 ins.
Presented by Miss Fé1icité Hardcastle, 17 June 1965.
Note: This bracelet was acquired in India by Sir William Herschel and given to his sister, Maria S. Hardcastle, who gave it to her grand-daughter, Miss Félicité Hardcastle on 15 October 1924. Sir William James Herschel (1833-1917) served in the Bengal Civil Service from 1853 to 1878. He was on furlough in 1864 and probably gave the bracelet to his sister at this time as a wedding present. Bijouterie of this type was very popular in Delhi in the eighteen-sixties and seventies. B.H. Baden Powell refers to miniatures for bracelets in his ‘Handbook of the manufactures and arts of the Punjab’ (Lahore, 1872). Bahadur Shah II (ruled 1837-58) was the last Mughal Emperor; Dost Muhammad Khan was Amir of Afghanistan 1826-63. Both were symbols of the old way of life and of opposition to the British.
