Conventionalised portrait said to be Rani Laksmi Bai of Jhansi (d.1858)
- Scope & Content:
-
Portrait, head and shoulders, of an Indian lady with red, blue and gold dress and pink veil. Blue background.
Probably by a Lahore or Amritsar artist, c.1860-70.
Inscribed on mount: ‘The Rani of Jhansi.’
Oval, water-colour on ivory; 1.75 by 1.25 ins.
Purchased 28 December 1904, together with a set of Sikh ivory miniatures Add.Or.3080-3099.
Note: This appears to be a conventional portrait of Rani Laksmi Bai of Jhansi, principal widow of Raja Gangadhar Rao, whose state had lapsed to the British under Lord Dalhousie. On 10 June 1857, following a massacre of Europeans in Jhansi by local Indian troops, she was proclaimied ruler and resisted the British in alliance with Tantia Topi, General of Nana Sahib of Cawnpore. She was killed in June 1858 at Gwalior, wearing male attire and fighting bravely. The Rani became a symbol of resistance to the British like Dost Muhammad and the Sikh heroes. No authentic portrait is known of her.
