- Scope & Content:
-
Portrait of H.H. Maharaja Sir Jang Bahadur Kunwar Rana, Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of Nepal (1817-77, ruled 1846-77).
By a Nepali artist, Katmandu, 1851. [Possibly by Bhaujaman Citrakar, the artist of the oil version, see below.]
Inscribed: ‘Maharaja Sir Jung Bahadur. G.C.B. Nepaul. 1851.’
Water-colour; 13 by 8.5 ins.
Presented by Brigadier G.P. Oldfield and Miss Margaret Oldfield, grandson and grand-daughter of Dr Henry Ambrose Oldfield, 27 April 1966, together with WD2778-2871, Mss Eur C193 and Add.Or.2610-14.
Note: Dr Henry Ambrose Oldfield, from whose collection this drawing came, was Residency Surgeon, Katmandu, Nepal, from 1850 to 1868. He was a keen amateur artist and made many sketches of landscapes and architecture in Nepal (see WD2778-2871). He appears to have made contact with local Nepali artists and to have acquired this drawing soon after his arrival.
The drawing is another version of the oil painting which was presented to the East India Company by Maharaja Sir Jang Bahadur during his visit to England in 1850 (see F36). Oldfield arrived in Nepal about the time when the Maharaja was setting off for England, and must have acquired this version soon after.
