- Title:

A page of calligraphy, two lines of Dakhni Urdu in naskhi script, a verse from Ibrahim ‘Adil Shah’s Kitab-i Nauras, signed Jug.
- Scope & Content:
-
A page of calligraphy, two lines of Dakhni Urdu in naskhi script, a verse from Ibrahim ‘Adil Shah’s ‘Kitab-i Nauras’, signed ‘Jug’.
Inscribed on reverse in nasta‘liq: ‘‘abd al-latif’, and: ‘This is the writing of Ibrahim Jugudguroo. This was purchased from the grandson of Mohamed Ali Moonshee of the Jama Masjid at Bijapur (he was know to Col. Meadows Taylor) and is said to have been written by Ibrahim Adil Shah, whose name is on it. It is in Arabic and is said to be a poem. It was taken out of a book of some age. Bijapur 16/2/88. W. Sandford,’ together with notices of Ibrahim ‘Adil Shah (reg.1580-1627), whose title Jagadguru indicates his encyclopaedic knowledge of the arts, and a separate letter from the donor stating that the ‘book of some age’ was an album of portraits of the Mughal emperors.
60 by 116 mm, within pink and blue borders, mounted on an album page spashed with silver 143 by 230 mm.
Presented by W. Sandford, 1922.
Note: The apparent signature ‘Jug’ is possibly an illusion to Ibrahim’s nickname of ‘Jagadguru’ No other examples of his calligraphy seem to be known. On the other hand, the much later attribution to ‘Abd al-Latif is possibly more reliable: he was one of Bijapur’s principal calligraphers, being responsible for the most important of the surviving manuscripts of the ‘Kitab-i Nauras’ now in the Central Records Office, Hyderabad.
