‘Charba’ with water-colour; oval; mounted on paper.
20 by 25 mm; page 92 by 75 mm.
Ghazi al-Din Haidar is depicted head and shoulders, almost full face, with a curtain behind him. He wears a crown, indicating that the portrait was made after he was granted the title of King of Oudh in 1819 [Probably after Robert Home, see the Home Collection.].
Note: This small drawing is accompanied by the following letter dated 31 December 1909 to Dr F.W. Thomas, Librarian of the India Office Library 1903-27: ‘Dear Thomas, I don’t know that the ‘picture of Ghazi uddin Haidar on skin paper’is of any interest, but if it is, will you keep it also for the Library; it would certainly be lost if I had the keeping of it. Yours sincerely, T. Morison.’ Sir Theodore Morison (1863-1936), who had been a Professor at the Muslim Anglo-Oriental College, Aligarh, from 1889 to 1905, was a Member of the Council of India from 1906 to 1916.
