Two mendicants begging alms from a grain seller.
- Scope & Content:
-
Two mendicants ‘(suthra shahi)’ begging alms from a grain seller who is seated in his shop.
By an artist from the Punjab Hills working in the Punjab Plains probably at Lahore or Amritsar, c.1850.
Gouache; red border with black and white rules; 7.5 by 9.75 ins.
Presented by Mildred and W.G. Archer, 1 July, 1969.
Note: Comparable in style to painting in Guler, Kangra district, c.1830-40 (see Archer, 1966).
‘Suthra shahis’ are non-sectarian mendicants peculiar to the Punjab. They revere Tegh Bahadur, father of Guru Govind Singh, as their founder. When begging, they sing songs and clash together two black sticks. They wear black perpendicular streaks down their foreheads.
