Buddhist deities of the ‘bhairava (krodha)’ or ‘yabyum’ kind.
By a Tibetan artist, mid-19th century.
A number of the deities are inscribed with their names in Tibetan script.
Inscribed on back in Tibetan script (dbu-can) vertically placed: ‘Om ah hum svah hah; in’ modern cursive dbu-med: ‘zes.ri.mohi.pdu.byed. me-pho. hbrug. lor. phan. sanns. gsan.pyags. chos.sde. mgon. tu.sprun. phrug. bris. min. zur. tson. hdzin. pas. bphug (?) brin.spu.hpyis.paho sarva. mangalam. geho. dgeho dgeho zu.dag; in’ Hodgson’s hand: ‘Esoteric Buddhism. Copy of the nearly obliterated picture gone to Paris; in’ pencil: ‘Esoteric Buddhism of Bhot or Tibet.’
Gouache on cloth; 39 by 24.5 ins.
Presented by Brian Houghton Hodgson sometime between 1827 and 1864.
Note: Hodgson (1800-94) served in India from 1818 to 1844. He was Assistant Commissioner in Kumaon 1819; Assistant Resident Nepal 1820; Acting Resident 1829; and Resident 1833 until his resignation in 1844. After leave in England he returned to India and lived in Darjeeling until 1858 when he finally left India.
